DVD Netflix posted a picture with a short tweet a few days ago, saying that the man who has rented the most discs out of all of its subscribers is now at 13380 discs. Hello, you guys die-hard DVD fans. My question is: do you backup DVDs? If yes, which software do you use? Is it good enough?
DVD ripping to digital formats like MP4 does facilitate our enjoyment of old-fashioned media. That’s why we made this list of three best free DVD rippers in 2019, with software selected by most users. If you are using one of them, check if there is function update. If you are just about to get one, go through the review and choose based on your needs.
1. WinX DVD Ripper
WinX DVD Ripper, as its name suggests, is a free DVD ripping tool compatible with Windows (Windows 10 32&64 bits and lower). There is also a Mac version.
In the input aspect, it accepts DVD disc, DVD ISO image and VIDEO_TS folder file. All three source media can be converted to MP4, AVI, MPEG, WMV, MOV, etc for playback or editing purpose. Special player models like Apple (iPhone, iPad, etc) and Android (HTC, Samsung, Huawei, etc) are also available, in case you have no idea which format should be used. Besides, it provides 1:1 full title copy, with all videos, audios and subtitles remained.
PROS:
WinX DVD Ripper is tested faster than Handbrake. The High Quality Engine ensures the output quality. All processes can be completed within three steps at an ultra fast speed, for its support of level-3 full GPU acceleration. Tests (on a Windows 10 64 bits PC; Inter Core TM i7-8700K CPU) show that the ripping of a 2.5 hour DVD takes only 5-9 minutes, while Handbrake takes 17 min 55s.
One of the main reasons for its prevalence is the ability to access and read all kinds of DVDs, be them homemade or commercial, 99-title or region coded, old scratched or new.
CONS:
Just note that the MKV output option is only available in the Mac version. And you need a code to activate the Platinum advanced version to remove time limitations. Get free license code here >
2. HandBrake
HandBrake is most well known as an open source and free video transcoder software, which also acts as DVD ripper. It can rip DVD disc, ISO image and video folder, but only output them in MP4 or MKV container formats.
PROS:
HandBrake provides a bunch of flexible video settings options, even permitting extra command lines. Experienced users can set different parameters to reach their goals. Besides, compared with all Apple devices options before, the latest HandBrake 1.2.0 now has presets for Amazon Fire, Google Chromecast and Roku. And it adds support for Nvidia NVENC acceleration.
CONS:
Those complicated video sets, on the other hand, make the learning curve steep for first-time users. Don’t choose HandBrake if most of your DVDs is commercial and protected with schemes like 99 titles, or you will receive an error message. Installing third-party libdvdcss would solve part of the problems, but it does not work for Blu-ray and strictly protected ones.
3.MakeMKV
MakeMKV was a free DVD to MKV ripper before. It now is time-limited for free using for 60 days and requires license code after that.
PROS:
The interface is simple and shows you all the titles. MakeMKV rips both DVD and Blu-ray discs.
CONS:
But you are only allowed to output files in MKV file format. And there is no support for copy protected DVDs and hardware acceleration, so DVD ripping with MakeMKV might be CPU intensive and time consuming. For that reason, plus the limitation of output formats, we put it in the last position.
Some people used to rip DVD to MKV with MakeMKV and then convert MKV to MP4 or other formats with HandBrake. Why not just do the DVD ripping and conversion all at once with WinX DVD Ripper?
